when did people start liking hypnotic, tacky, tasteless music ?

turn on the radio and compare that music to what was playing 10-20 years ago on the main stations. even classical music is becoming tasteless as people try to turn it into hypnotic new age music. the bible says that in the end days music in the great revived roman empire babylon eventually becomes twisted.

I’m not sure where you get your information about Scripture, but I’m pretty certain that’s not in the Bible.

As for today’s music, it’s actually really simple why it sucks. It’s no longer about music; it’s about making money. A lot of artists today are just copying each other. Somebody records a song, it gets radio play, it gets popular (for whatever reason), and then everybody else wants to use the beat of that song or a lyrical phrase in their own music. Usher once said in a TV interview that he was a businessman first and a musician second. Well, with an attitude like that, no wonder he produces such mediocrity.

Of course, popular musicians wouldn’t be popular without the support of the people. But a lot of people are musically ignorant. They don’t know there is better music out there. They turn on the radio and listen to whatever is playing. Pop musicians have great marketing teams today, but they’re selling an image more than they’re selling music. If they can convince enough people that an artist is (or should be) popular, then those people will influence their friends’ musical choices. How many people say they like a certain artist or band simply because somebody told them that artist or band is popular?

I don’t listen to the radio very often anymore because I’m tired of mediocre crap. I’m tired of listening to musicians copy each other again and again. Music is an art form, and as such it should be original, new, different. There is music like that today, but it’s hard to find.

It’s why I don’t listen to the radio.
People listen to the stuff shoved down their throats. No matter that there’s no instrumental talent, the lyrics are generic and remote and the singing in sub-par at best. My sister listens to it. All of it.
Bring back guitar solos and people playing their instruments.

It’s like the Queen musical….rock music will be outlawed!

I was going to say "sometime during the 70′s, when disco started to become popular".

I see by your reference to "new age music" and the reference to Babylon that you’re one of those who interpret the Bible in a more literal and predictive fashion than proper historical context (ie that it’s written by the people of that time for the people of that time about events of that time – namely in figurative language that was common at that time in apocryphal texts – describing Jewish antipathy towards reigning Roman authority).

For those that have no idea what this guy is talking about, he is referring to Revelations 18:22 (shown here in brief context)

    Revelations 18:21-22

"21And a mighty angel took up a stone like a great millstone,
and cast it into the sea, saying, Thus with violence shall that
great city Babylon be thrown down, and shall be found
    no more at all.

22And the voice of harpers, and musicians, and of pipers,
and trumpeters, shall be heard no more at all in thee; and no
craftsman, of whatsoever craft he be, shall be found any more
in thee; and the sound of a millstone shall be heard no more at
    all in thee…."

The argument is made by those who take the nuances of Biblical text very seriously that music that is not inspired directly by God and music that takes many modern forms (including worship teams found in most contemporary christian churches, interestingly enough) is inspired by pagan and/or satanic sources and should be shunned/condemned/whatever.

Okay, so let’s take music from 10 years ago. 1999? I was 19, just got out of high school, and was listening to Korn. Right, there’s some real un-tacky music right there!

Other chart-toppers were "No Scrubs" by TLC, "Livin La Vida Loca" by Ricky Martin, and "Wild Wild West" by Will Smith.

How about 20 years ago? Admittedly, I was 9, and pretty much only listened to jazz or oldies (but not the Rolling Stones, because my parents said they did drugs), but let’s peruse the charts…

"Every Rose Has Its Thorn" by Poison, "She Drives Me Crazy" by Fine Young Cannibals, "Love Shack" by B-52′s? Riiight, none of those songs are hypnotic or tacky in the least!

[All of these titles were taken from Top 100 Lists from that year]

The sad truth is that conservative religious people don’t like change. They cling to the past because they look at the past through rose-colored glasses. They don’t remember how their grandparents may have protested Elvis’ hip-shaking… yet now they have his Greatest Hits collection? Sure, the moral fabric of society was absolutely crushed because Elvis did some pelvic wiggles on national tv!

Malachi 3:11 (I think) says something like "I am the Lord, I do not change". Well, everything else does. The world today is not the same as the world a hundred or a thousand or ten thousand years ago – the one constant is that things will always change. That is a prerequisite for life, for conflict brings change, and without conflict life could not exist! [example: We eat cows. That's a conflict that we win. Trees compete with other plants to thrive in the jungle, and inevitably there will be some losers. Life feeds on life feeds on life... this is necessary... to quote Maynard from Tool....]

Me, I think people have always like hypnotic, tacky, tasteless music. Celsus criticizes early Christians for playing music that he obviously considers cheap and tacky – music that he claims is only played to beguile the young and gullible, to paraphrase him very very poorly. The same thing happens today, both within the Christian and secular spheres.

I have a feeling that there are only two things that are endless… the Universe and the human capacity for stupidity, and we aren’t sure about the Universe. [another great quote, badly paraphrased *grin*]

There’s always been good and bad music. ALWAYS.

At the same time people were listening to great stuff from Sinatra they were also playing "How Much is that Doggie in the Window?". The 60s gave us the Beatles AND Bobby Vee. In the 70s, you got Led Zeppelin AND the Ritchie Family. 80s were U2 and Duran Duran (sorry, I don’t understand what people think is so great about them). 90s were Nirvana and Marilyn Manson (Alice Cooper with weaker songs). And in the 00s? We get Coldplay and Matchbox 20.

  • Well written. I never thought I would agree with this opinion, but I’m beginning to view things from a different view. I have to research more on this as it appears very interesting. One thing I don’t get though is how everything is related together.
