Do hypnotists work – serious answers ONLY PLEASE?

I am wondering if hypnotists are for real. I have heard that people have gone to them for weight loss, and to quit smoking. I wondered if a hypnotist could help me forget something that is keeping me from moving forward in my life. I’m not joking, I really wonder if they’re for real, one of them might be able to help me with this ailment.
Thank you

Hypnosis only works if you want it to. Some people can’t be hypnotized, no matter how hard they try.

Hypnosis isn’t like what you see in movies, to where you have no memory of what you did.
Hypnosis is more like getting drunk. Really really drunk in some cases. You’ll do things that you wouldn’t normally because your mind uses the "hypnosis" as an excuse to do them.

To quit smoking and such, it can help but only if you want to quit. If you don’t want to, then the hypnosis won’t work.

You also can’t be hypnotized to do something against your morals or values, like killing your best friend or your family or anyone for that matter.

Hypnosis uses techniques that unlock certain parts of your mind while putting you into a semi-conscious state in which you are more susceptible to post-hypnotic suggestions.

More susceptible DOES NOT in any way mean you are helpless to the person’s hypnotic suggestions. You can easily resist them and you are aware of them.

What you want to do is tricky, it’s locking a part of your mind rather than unlocking it.

The hypnotist MAY be able to aid you in forgetting, but ultimately will NOT be able to lock it away forever.
Memory is something that is a part of you. It is what has shaped you and made you what you are.
In order to repress memories, you need to learn to let them go. A therapist or shrink would be more useful in these cases.

But remember, you can never fully forget, so you will always have to learn to live with it to some degree.

I don’t think that a hypnotist will help you forget something…I think your’e going to want to see a therapist for that. There is a reason that your mind isn’t letting you forget that problem, so in order to move on past the issue instead of just side-stepping it by "forgetting it", you should deal with it. And a therapist can help.
Hypnotists are highly debated in the world of psychology. It’s all about influence. Are you a highly influenced person? Can you be easily swayed? Then hypnotism may work…if not, it probably won’t. It’s usually about what you want to believe when you are hypnotized, not about what is actually going on.
However, I can only say that I have this opinion from what I learned in my Psych classes and not from personal experience.
Although, from what I’ve learned, heard, read, and discussed, I don’t think that hypnotism is something that you would benefit from.
    Consider therapy :)

Persons who are receptive to hypnotic suggestions can certainly be helped in behavioral modification situations.

I have used hypnosis in learning about more spiritual matters in life. It has worked for me. I haven’t talked with anyone who used it for quitting smoking or weight loss, so I can’t comment on that.

I think in your case, it would be important to understand why you went through whatever you went through that keeps you from moving forward. It’s my own experience that trying to forget something that needs healing in your life, only makes it come back with a vengence later. And that is no fun. I think a good hypnotist can help you work through the issue too, so you can permanently put it behind you.

Google Lisa Gawlas on the web. She has great intentions and good energy and might be able to assist you. Best wishes!

Yes they can work for some people and they are real.I have often thought about trying one but I cannot be hypnotized because of an illness.I know this from an experimental test done years ago.One might help but a psychologist might work as well. Good Luck!!!
