How do stage hypnotists do it?
hypnotize people?
As one of the answer stated about being weak minded and plants is completely false. Weak minded doesn’t make someone easier to be hypnotized. One could easily argue that it could have the opposite effect.
But back to your question…
Hypnosis isn’t the mystical thing that Hollywood would have you believe. It’s a very natural state. Anytime you’ve lost track of time, or been driving and didn’t remember if you passed a road or not, etc, you’ve been in a hypnotic state.
Stage hypnotists always have something going for them. The volunteers that come up on stage, are willing and wanting to participate. Some of the testing they do when they have the "large group" of volunteers weeds out the unwilling and keeps the very willing.
From there you have some very willing and highly motivated volunteers, and really it’s no different than what a hypnotherapist would do. They guide them into a state of hypnosis, which is just a focused state of concentration (relaxation is not necessary, but typically they go for that) that by passes the more "critical factor" of your consciousness. So with that bypassed, your a lot more suggestible to do something, but only to a certain limit. You will not go against your morals or do anything against your will.
I’ve answered other questions about how hypnosis works, check through them, that will also provide some infomration.
Hope it helps, email is on the profile if you require clarification.
cheers,

10 or so years ago I discussed this with a former psychologist. The typical ‘hypontist’ on stage uses plants and the weak minded. He told me you can’t be hypnotized like that if you don’t believe you can. If you think you can then you are receptive to it. If you know you can’t be your mind will easily block the attempts. Personally I’ve never believed it, been attempted on and nothing.

You have to stay focus and meditate, it almost feels like you’re falling asleep, but you whisper soft words, and that feels good in the ear, like a subliminal message, when they wake up, it’s like a remark. This is how I think it works, but of course it takes a lot of practice.
